Freedom or slavery based enterprises?

Here are my friend and mentor Jim McCarthy very valuable reality checks on what’s (or should be) behind Agile and SCRUM methodologies

“In a freedom-based enterprise, there is no accountability for anything at all without agreements. I am not accountable for what you say or think I should do, regardless of who or what you are; I am accountable for that which I have agreed to do.

Slavery, whether or not the slaves are paid money, is characterized by the invariant coerced belief that I *am* accountable for what my “bosses” or “superiors” say I must do, and I suffer and by my sufferance extend all the practices attending thereto.

Inviting, opting in, and all the freedom of walking through the door when invited, or crossing a boundary into a type of institutional or corporate state, is critically important; but it is just a buncha bullshit window dressing if :

1. we have no means to freely decide together the things best left to us to decide;

2. we have no understanding of interpersonal alignment, nor any practices to routinely and frequently create and maintain aligned states;

3. we seek no further development of our personal capabilities for ever-maturing and increasingly intimate collaboration;

4. we form neither vast, nor compelling, nor triumphant visions to share;

5. we seek no further virtue;

6. we surrender all our freedoms on the altar of professionalism and financial security;

7. we neither aggregate our IQs, nor combine our creative energies, nor devotedly pursue together our most sublime passions;

8. and we thereby create a future like our past : a time of terrible discord springing from our own absent nobility.

The issue is not whether agile or scrum and/or their related principalities, *invite* us (or not), critical though that may be; the issue is whether the enterprise in question is a new type of free state or if it persists indefinitely – and with our full compliance – as the slave state it is most likely to be.

(NOTE: Suffering as a type of contemporary wage slave, though real, is not in the same class – or even in the same world – as the suffering that whites have imposed upon blacks via their enslavement of them) (Jim McCarthy, 2018 reprinted with permission, emphasis mine)

As soon as summer ends…

I know it may sound a little bit obsessive, but I am looking forward to the end of the summer just started, mainly because I am excited about the Sept. 24th-25th Greatness Guild Conference.

Conference theme is “Awesome humans, high-performance teams” and I know it will be a great opportunity to learn and share, especially because the whole conference will use Open Space Technology!

Plus, the conference will be online on the Zoom platform and with free tickets!

If you’re passionate about greatness at work and in relationships, join us. Call for papers is always open and attendance is free!

Something new in 2018 that scared me? Done!

Yesterday I started teaching the Certified Competent Coach classes at Julia Stewart’s School of Coaching Mastery.

What’s scaring about that? At least three things:

  1. English is not my first language and I am never satisfied about it
  2. I have been Julia’s student for the same training six years ago (and after that for the Positive Psychology Coach program)
  3. Due to time zone difference, it was 9pm my time: and my English worsens after sunset

Well, I have to say I had a great time instead and I enjoyed a very diverse group of smart and motivated students. So I look forward to continue!

If you are looking for some no-nonsense, state of the art training, check this school (yes, I am advertising it explicitly :-))

Happy 20018!

24 hours of awesome!

I’ll be speaking at the world’s first Greatness Conference tht will take place Sept 28th, 2017 in Paris. Check the details: http://www.greatnessguild.org/ggcon2017/. Until mid-june you may reserve your spot for free!

High Performance Teams

Your team can be ten times better.

What does that mean? That means your professional team can accomplish 10x more work, do it with 10x more quality, 10x faster, or with 10x fewer resources. Your family can be 10x happier. Your school can be 10x more effective at helping people learn. Your community group can be 10x better at making life better for the people it serves. Even you yourself can be 10x more effective at getting what you want.

In other words, you can be great. Your team can be great.

Greatness
Can you say these things about your teams?

  1. My projects are completed effortlessly on schedule and within budget every time.
  2. Every team I’ve ever been on has shared a vision.
  3. In meetings, we only ever do what will get results.
  4. No one blames “management” or anyone else if they don’t get what they want.
  5. Everybody shares their best ideas right away.
  6. Ideas are immediately unanimously approved, improved, or rejected by the team.
  7. Action on approved ideas begins immediately.
  8. Conflict is always resolved swiftly and productively.

The Core Protocols are one way to make teams that have these characteristics.

Some of the things you’ll learn:

  • Results-oriented behaviors
  • How to enter a state of shared vision with a team and stay there
  • How to create trust on a team
  • How to stay rational and healthy
  • How to make team decisions effectively
  • How to move quickly and with high quality towards the team’s goals

This 30-second video summarizes the experience.

What do I do for a living?

It is one of those question we often answer implicitly translating it in “what’s your job?” and doing that we adopt a point of view about life as if it had mainly to do with “doing” something and usually just one thing, the one related with getting money. In these frout minutes video I just reflect on what could be a more appropriate answer.
Beware: you will be exposed to my personal interpretation of English! 🙂

Architecting culture

Culture is just another name for behaviors’ recipes.

Culture in teams can be hacked as any other device in order to get better performances.

In this video I discuss the idea of changing team and organizations culture both ways: changing behaviors and changing rules.

Managing emotions is an illusion.

14-1815-Scrum_Prague_Speaker_FM2

instead, you can create and transmit emotions as a way to increase freedom.

Emotions are fuel used by human beings to make decisions and choices. But, when it comes to emotion in teams we often treat them as a byproduct of team activity or we pay attention to them only when it seems that any other “rational approach” fails (usually in conflicts). Only at that point we start talking about “managing” emotions. This session propose ways to use emotions effectively to fuel every moment of team activities. Forget managing and start using them. Teams are systems too complex for applying mechanistic rules but not enough complex for applying statistic approaches. This leaves team coaches with the problem of finding tools capable of navigating team performance complexities. In this session I propose that effective, consistent and pervasive use of emotions can boost  team performance and help to keep the performance at a costant level. My goal in this session is to provoke fresh thoughts about the role of emotions in team performance. We’ll see how emotions are necessary to understand any team development process model and we’ll apply them to well known team development models. We’ll experiment with a basic set of team protocols capable of activating and processing emotional information in a team.
